La Maddalena Archipelago (Italy)

Weather…

The La Maddalena Archipelago lies off the northeastern coast of Sardinia in the Strait of Bonifacio, comprising seven main islands and numerous smaller islets. The primary islands, La Maddalena, Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Razzoli, and Santa Maria, are characterized by their dramatic granite rock formations and exceptionally clear turquoise waters. Geologically, these islands are the remnants of a land bridge that once connected Sardinia and Corsica, composed almost entirely of Variscan granite sculpted into surreal shapes by wind and sea erosion. Historically, the archipelago held immense strategic value for naval powers in the Mediterranean; Admiral Nelson used it as a staging ground, and a young Napoleon Bonaparte led an unsuccessful invasion in 1793. Caprera is particularly notable as the final home and burial place of Italian hero Giuseppe Garibaldi. Since 1994, the entire archipelago has been protected as a National Park to safeguard its fragile marine ecosystems and unique beaches, such as the famous Pink Beach on Budelli.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The La Maddalena Archipelago is best reached by ferry from Palau in northern Sardinia, which regularly crosses to the main island of La Maddalena. To explore the smaller, uninhabited islands, numerous guided boat tours or rental boats are offered from the ports.
📅
Best season
The best travel time for beach visits and snorkeling is from June to September. In spring and autumn, conditions are handy for hiking on the granite rocks of the islands, with the landscape then impressing with green tones and many blooming wild plants.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain consists of characteristic reddish granite rocks, hidden coves, and low, scrubby macchia vegetation. The paths on the islands are often sandy or stony and lead to secluded beaches with crystal-clear water.
🎒
What to bring
Visitors should pack snorkeling gear, sun protection, and sufficient water, as there is no infrastructure on most beaches of the smaller islands. Comfortable sandals or water shoes are advisable for walking on the sometimes sharp-edged granite rocks.
🅿️
Parking
Parking lots are mainly found in the port of Palau in Sardinia or in the main town of La Maddalena. On other islands accessible via a bridge like Caprera, there are only limited spaces at the ends of the roads, so arriving early is important.
⚠️
Safety
Since the archipelago is a national park, strict rules apply to protect nature; taking sand or stones is prohibited. Boaters must watch out for shallows and rocks beneath the water's surface, which are often difficult to spot.
⏱️
Time needed
A full day is the minimum for a boat tour through the archipelago. However, those who also want to hike or visit the Garibaldi museum on Caprera should plan for two to three days to fully capture the diversity of the islands.
