Catania, Sicily's second-largest city, is situated on the island's eastern coast at the base of Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano. The city's history is defined by its resilience in the face of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, most notably the devastating events of 1693. Following that disaster, Catania was rebuilt in a grand Late Baroque style, characterized by the frequent use of dark lava stone, giving the city a unique aesthetic. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, centered around the Piazza del Duomo and the iconic Elephant Fountain. Catania is an important academic center, home to the oldest university in Sicily, established in 1434. The city features a busy commercial port and has become a hub for the high-tech industry, often referred to as Etna Valley. It is also the birthplace of composer Vincenzo Bellini, celebrated at the opulent Teatro Massimo Bellini. Every February, the city hosts the festival of Saint Agatha, one of the largest religious processions in the world.
