Ostia Antica (Italy)

Weather…

Ostia Antica was the principal harbor city of ancient Rome, situated at the original mouth of the Tiber River. Founded in the 4th century BC as a military fort (Castrum) to guard the coastline, it grew into a bustling commercial hub with a population exceeding 100,000 during its peak in the 2nd century AD. The archaeological site provides an exceptional record of Roman town planning and daily life, featuring multi-story apartment blocks (Insulae), public baths, storehouses, and a large theater. Unlike Pompeii, Ostia’s decline was gradual; the shifting of the coastline due to silting rendered its harbor useless, leading to its eventual abandonment in the early Middle Ages. This preservation by neglect means the city was never built over, leaving its brick structures and intricate floor mosaics largely intact. Key highlights include the Square of the Corporations, which served as the center for trade guilds from across the empire. Today, the park covers 150 hectares and has a profound look at the social, economic, and religious fabric of a Roman port city.
