Grannagh Castle (Ireland)

Weather…

Grannagh Castle is an imposing medieval ruin situated on the northern bank of the River Suir in County Kilkenny, near the border with Waterford. Originally established in the 13th century, the castle became a primary stronghold for the influential Butler family, the Earls of Ormonde, who maintained control over the site for centuries. The architecture features a blend of a formidable Norman tower house and later hall additions, illustrating the transition from purely defensive structures to residences of high social status. Its massive curtain walls and circular corner towers were designed to command the river crossing and monitor commercial traffic heading toward Waterford. During the Cromwellian invasion of Ireland in 1650, the castle was besieged and eventually surrendered to Parliamentary forces, leading to its subsequent dereliction. Over the following centuries, the castle was abandoned and partially dismantled for local building materials. The surviving ruins remain a stark reminder of the Butler family's territorial power and provide a pretty landmark along the historic Suir river valley.
