Monasterboice (Ireland)

Weather…

Monasterboice, located in County Louth, is one of Ireland's most significant early Christian monastic settlements, founded in the late 5th century by Saint Buithe. The site is world-renowned for its monumental 10th-century high crosses, particularly Muiredach's High Cross, which stands 5.5 meters tall and is considered one of the finest examples of biblical stone carving in Europe. In addition to the crosses, the grounds house an impressive 28-meter-high round tower that once served as a place of refuge and a bell tower, though it was severely damaged by fire in 1097. The settlement remained a leading religious and academic center until the foundation of the nearby Mellifont Cistercian Abbey in 1142. Today, the complex includes the ruins of two 14th-century churches and a historical cemetery that documents continuous use over a millennium and a half. Monasterboice provides deep insight into Irish monastic culture prior to the Anglo-Norman invasion.
