Grattan Bridge is a prominent road bridge spanning the River Liffey in Dublin, connecting Capel Street to Parliament Street. The current structure was completed in 1874, replacing the 1755 Essex Bridge which had become structurally inadequate for modern traffic. Designed by the engineer Bindon Blood Stoney, the bridge features flat cast-iron arches resting on sturdy granite piers, allowing for a wider roadway. One of its most distinctive architectural features is the series of ornate Victorian lamp standards that line the parapets, adding an elegant aesthetic to the functional design. Historically, this crossing point has been vital for linking the commercial districts of the northside and southside of the city. The bridge is named after Henry Grattan, a celebrated 18th-century Irish politician who advocated for legislative independence. Today, it remains a critical corridor for Dublin's bus network and a favored spot for photographers capturing the river's cityscape.
