Ferns Castle (Ireland)

Weather…

Ferns Castle is a significant Anglo-Norman ruin located in the town of Ferns, County Wexford, which once served as the historic capital of the Kingdom of Leinster. The current stone fortress was erected around 1237 by William Marshal, the 2nd Earl of Pembroke, replacing an earlier Gaelic stronghold. Its architectural design followed a rectangular layout characterized by four massive circular corner towers, one of which remains largely intact today. This surviving tower houses a rare and exquisitely preserved chapel featuring an ornate rib-vaulted ceiling, a sophisticated feature seldom found in military fortifications of that era. Ferns was a primary political and religious hub for centuries, deeply entwined with the legacy of Diarmait Mac Murchada, whose appeal for Norman assistance changed the course of Irish history. The castle was extensively damaged in 1649 during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland, leading to its eventual decline. Today, the site is managed as a national monument, showcasing the strategic and artistic prowess of 13th-century Norman masonry.
