Taman Sari Water Castle (Indonesia)

Weather…

The Taman Sari Water Castle is a former royal garden of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta, located in Central Java. Construction began in 1758 during the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, following the Giyanti Treaty that established the Sultanate. The complex was designed as a multi-functional site, serving as a place for rest, meditation, defense, and hiding for the royal family. Its architecture is a unique blend of Javanese and Portuguese styles, largely attributed to a Portuguese architect who worked closely with the Sultan. Historically, Taman Sari was divided into four distinct areas, including a large artificial lake with islands and pavilions, and a central bathing complex. The central bathing area, known as Umbul Pasiraman, remains the most iconic part of the site today, featuring three large pools and ornate carvings. Another notable feature is the Sumur Gumuling, a circular underground mosque reachable via a series of tunnels. Although much of the original complex was damaged by an earthquake in 1867, it remains a popular cultural site.
