Fort Rotterdam Makassar (Indonesia)

Weather…

Fort Rotterdam, located in the heart of Makassar, is one of the best-preserved examples of Dutch colonial military architecture in Indonesia. Originally a 16th-century fortress of the Gowa Kingdom called 'Ujung Pandang,' it was surrendered to the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1667 following the Treaty of Bongaya. The Dutch rebuilt it in their characteristic style, with thick stone walls and five bastions, renaming it after the birthplace of Admiral Speelman. The fort served as a military headquarters and a center for the spice trade monopoly in eastern Indonesia. Today, its yellow-walled buildings house the La Galigo Museum, which showcases the rich maritime history and culture of the Bugis and Makassarese people.
