Wakatobi is an acronym of the four main islands: Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Southeast Sulawesi was once described by Jacques Cousteau as a 'Marine Nirvana'. The reefs are exceptionally healthy, hosting an incredible variety of macro life and pristine coral gardens. Beyond world-class diving and snorkeling, the main cultural draw is the Bajo people, the famous sea nomads. Living in stilt houses above the water, they possess a unique and ancient connection to the sea. The islands themselves offer powdery white beaches and a serene atmosphere far from mainstream tourism. Local dining features fresh seafood and traditional staples like Kasuami. Access is usually through domestic flights or private charters operated by the resorts. The best time to experience Wakatobi is during the dry seasons from April to June and September to November for optimal diving conditions.
