Ternate is an island city in the North Maluku province of Indonesia, historically renowned as one of the world's primary sources of cloves. The island is essentially defined by the active Gamalama volcano, whose fertile slopes provided the convenient conditions for the spice trade that drove global exploration in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Sultanate of Ternate was a powerful Islamic kingdom that pre-dated European arrival and expanded its influence across the eastern archipelago. Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch forces all competed for control of Ternate, leading to the construction of several stone forts, such as Fort Oranje and Fort Tolukko, which remain as historical landmarks. Geographically, Ternate is located in the Maluku Sea and remains a vital logistical gateway for the surrounding islands. While the spice trade is no longer its primary economic driver, the city continues to export nutmeg and cloves, supplemented by fishing and government services. The Sultan's Palace remains the spiritual and cultural heart of the city.
