Prambanan Temple (Indonesia)

Weather…

Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple site in Indonesia and one of the most sophisticated examples of 9th-century architecture in Southeast Asia. Built around 850 AD by the Sanjaya Dynasty, it was intended to consolidate Hindu power in Central Java following the era of Buddhist dominance. The complex is dedicated to the Trimurti, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, with the central Shiva temple soaring to a height of 47 meters. Intricate bas-reliefs adorning the inner walls depict the epic tales of the Ramayana and Bhagavata Purana. After the capital of the Mataram Kingdom shifted to East Java, the site fell into disrepair and suffered significant damage from earthquakes. Restoration efforts began in 1918 and have successfully rebuilt the primary structures using original stone blocks where possible. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991, Prambanan serves as a spirited cultural venue for traditional Javanese performances.
