The Dieng Plateau, perched at over 2,000 meters above sea level in Central Java, is often referred to as the 'Abode of the Gods'. The cool mountain air and the frequent mists that roll across the landscape create a hauntingly beautiful and mystical atmosphere. It is one of Indonesia's oldest sacred sites, home to some of the earliest surviving Hindu stone temples in Java, dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries. Volcanic energy is palpable throughout the plateau. The Sikidang Crater features bubbling mud pots and vents spewing white sulfurous steam. Another natural highlight is Telaga Warna (Colorful Lake), which shimmers in shades of turquoise, green, and yellow due to its high mineral content. For many, the highlight of a trip to Dieng is the pre-dawn hike up Sikunir Hill to witness the legendary 'Golden Sunrise' over a spectacular sea of clouds and distant volcanic peaks. Access to the plateau is usually via the town of Wonosobo, which can be reached by bus from Yogyakarta or Semarang. Due to the high altitude, it is significantly colder here than in other parts of Java; nighttime temperatures in July and August can even drop below freezing. The dry season from May to September is the best time for exploration. Be sure to try 'Carica', a local highland papaya variety that is unique to this region.
