Pushkar
Pushkar is a major spiritual hub located on the edge of the Thar Desert. The city is built around the sacred Pushkar Lake, bordered by 52 ghats where pilgrims perform ritual ablutions. A unique feature is the Brahma Temple, one of the few in the world dedicated to the creator god. The atmosphere in the narrow lanes is defined by mysticism, incense, and the chanting of prayers. The surrounding hills offer hiking trails to sites like the Savitri Temple, providing spectacular sunrise views over the town and desert. Gastronomically, Pushkar is strictly vegetarian and alcohol-free; visitors should try the famous local sweet, Malpua. The town is globally renowned for the annual Pushkar Camel Fair in November, which draws thousands of livestock traders and tourists. Access is typically via bus or taxi from nearby Ajmer, which has excellent rail connections to Delhi and Jaipur. The best time to visit is from October to March, offering pleasant weather for sightseeing and experiencing the animated religious festivals.
