Noonday Gun (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

The Noonday Gun, located on the waterfront of Causeway Bay, is a historical landmark and one of Hong Kong's most enduring colonial traditions. Since the mid-19th century, the gun has been fired daily at precisely 12:00 PM, originally serving as a time signal for ships in Victoria Harbour. Maintained by the trading firm Jardine Matheson, the tradition reportedly began as a penalty imposed by a British naval officer. According to the legend, a Jardines employee fired a private salute for a manager arriving by sea, which was considered an offense as such salutes were reserved for the military. As punishment, the company was ordered to fire a gun every day at noon to provide the public time. Today, the firing ceremony remains a popular attraction, featuring a uniformed guard and a 1901 Hotchkiss 3-pounder gun. On New Year's Eve, the gun is also fired at midnight to ring in the new year, a practice known as 'eight bells,' echoing a long-standing maritime tradition.
