Former French Mission Building (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

The Former French Mission Building, located in Hong Kong’s Central District, is a premier example of colonial-era architecture. The current structure was completed in 1917 by the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris, which rebuilt it on the site of a previous grand residence. Architecturally, the building is a memorable neo-classical design with Edwardian influences, featuring a bustling red-brick facade contrasted with elegant granite dressings. A notable feature is the small chapel located beneath the prominent dome at its northwest corner. Over the decades, the building has undergone various transformations, serving as government offices, the Russian Consulate, and a courtroom following World War II. From 1997 to 2015, it famously housed the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong. Declared a statutory monument in 1989, it stands today as a preserved historical gem amidst the modern skyscrapers of the financial district, reflecting the city’s complex administrative and missionary history.
