Habitation La Ferrière (Haiti)

Weather…

Habitation La Ferrière was a significant plantation in northern Haiti, closely linked to the history of the Milot region and the subsequent development of the famous Citadelle Laferrière. Originally founded in the 18th century as a thriving center of sugar production, the estate was characterized by its efficient organization and impressive stone buildings. During the colonial period, it was one of the key sources of wealth for French planters in this mountainous region. With the onset of the Haitian Revolution, the role of the habitation changed fundamentally; it became a logistical base for the revolutionary forces under Henri Christophe. Its proximity to Christophe's later coronation site, the Sans-Souci Palace, underscores the historical importance of this location. Today, the remains of the habitation are a major archaeological destination, providing insights into the transition from a slave-based plantation economy to independence.
