Habitation du Nord (Haiti)

Weather…

Habitation du Nord was one of the wealthiest agricultural enterprises in the former French colony of Saint-Domingue. Located in the fertile northern plain, this estate focused primarily on the production of high-quality indigo and later coffee. The architecture of the main house reflected the wealth of the plantation owners, featuring spacious verandas and massive stone foundations. Thousands of enslaved people worked under extreme conditions in these fields, laying the groundwork for subsequent social tensions. With the outbreak of the revolution in 1791, the habitation became a center of resistance and suffered severe damage from fires. Today, the remains of the industrial buildings testify to the complex infrastructure required for processing the harvests. The site remains an important location for researching Haitian identity and history.
