Temple of Poseidon (Sounion) (Greece)

Weather…

The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is one of the most dramatically situated sanctuaries of ancient Greece. Constructed between 444 and 440 BC during the Golden Age of Pericles, this Doric temple was built on the ruins of an earlier shrine and dedicated to the god of the sea. It perches on a 60-meter-high cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea, serving as a critical landmark for ancient mariners navigating toward Athens. Out of the original 34 columns, 16 remain standing today, their brilliant white marble creating a striking contrast against the deep blue waters. The site gained additional fame when the poet Lord Byron carved his name into one of the columns during his travels in the 19th century. Strategically, the cape was vital for controlling the maritime routes to the silver mines of Laurion and monitoring ship traffic.
