Sounion National Park (Greece)

Weather…

Established in 1974, Sounion National Park is the smallest national park in Greece, located at the southeastern tip of the Attica peninsula. Despite its size, it encompasses a unique blend of ecological, geological, and archaeological significance. The park's most iconic landmark is Cape Sounion, home to the ancient Temple of Poseidon, which stands as a sentinel over the Aegean Sea. The landscape is primarily composed of Aleppo pine forests and Mediterranean macchia adapted to the local limestone terrain. Notably, the park contains the ancient silver mines of Laurion, which were instrumental in financing the Athenian fleet and democracy during the 5th century BC. Modern visitors can explore a variety of hiking trails that traverse old mining shafts and lead to scenic coastal viewpoints. The area is also world-renowned among mineralogists, with over 250 different mineral species identified within the geological formations of the park.
