Parnitha National Park (Greece)

Weather…

Parnitha National Park is located about 30 kilometers north of Athens and is widely known as the 'green lung' of the Greek capital. Established in 1961, it encompasses the highest mountain in Attica, with the Karavola peak reaching 1,413 meters. The park is famous for its dense forests of Greek fir (Abies cephalonica) and Aleppo pine, which flourish in the higher altitudes. A distinct feature of the park is its population of red deer (Cervus elaphus), which lives here in isolation and is subject to rigorous conservation efforts. Geologically, the mountain is primarily composed of limestone, resulting in numerous caves such as the Cave of Pan, which served as a cult site in antiquity. Despite a catastrophic forest fire in 2007, extensive reforestation programs have fostered the steady recovery of the ecosystem. The park is home to over 1,000 plant species and has a vast network of hiking trails for outdoor enthusiasts. Parnitha is also a vital part of the European Natura 2000 network for the protection of wild species.
