Mount Dikti (Greece)

Weather…

The Dikti Mountains, also known as Lasithiotika Ori, are an impressive mountain range located in eastern Crete. Its highest summit, Spathi, rises to 2,148 meters, making it one of the three dominant massifs on the island. The range encircles the renowned Lasithi Plateau, a high-altitude agricultural plain once famous for its thousands of white-sailed windmills. In Greek mythology, Dikti is celebrated as the birthplace of Zeus; according to legend, his mother Rhea hid him in the Psychro Cave (Dictaean Cave) to protect him from Cronus. Geologically, the massif is characterized by limestone karst formations, deep sinkholes, and rugged gorges, supporting a rich variety of endemic flora and fauna. The vegetation includes Cretan oak and cypress forests, along with numerous rare aromatic herbs. Today, the mountains are a major destination for hiking and mountaineering, offering memorable vistas of both the Libyan and Aegean Seas from their rugged peaks.
