Milatos is an authentic, small fishing village on the northern coast of Crete that has largely retained its original charm. In contrast to the overcrowded tourist centers of the island, Milatos gives an oasis of peace where time seems to tick a little slower. The center of the village is located slightly inland, while Milatos Beach is right on the sparkling Aegean Sea. The village is famous for the historic Milatos Cave, which played a significant role in Cretan history and is now a fascinating destination for excursions. The coastline of Milatos is characterized by small pebble and sand coves, washed by the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea. Beaches such as Άσπες (Aspes) and Πλάκα (Plaka) offer a quiet environment, convenient for sun worshippers and families. Βόλια (Volia) is another appealing stretch of beach, while Μπάλος (Balos) captivates with its natural beauty, although it is not to be confused with the famous lagoon of the same name in western Crete. The beaches are usually uncrowded and offer genuine Cretan bathing pleasure. Along the waterfront of Milatos Beach, cozy tavernas are lined up, known for their excellent fish dishes and local seafood. Here visitors can enjoy the catch of the day while watching the sunset over the sea. The area around Milatos is good for long walks through ancient olive groves and exploring the wild Cretan nature. It is a place that perfectly combines traditional Cretan hospitality with an unspoiled seaside idyll.
