Diomedes Botanical Garden (Greece)

Weather…

The Julia and Alexander N. Diomedes Botanical Garden in Haidari, Athens, is the largest botanical garden in the Eastern Mediterranean. It was established in 1952 following the legacy of Alexander Diomedes, a former Greek Prime Minister who bequeathed his fortune for its creation. Spanning approximately 186 hectares at the foot of Mount Aegaleo, the garden hosts over 2,500 plant species from across the globe. In addition to vast tracts of natural forest, the facility features themed sections including a medicinal plant garden, a historical section showcasing species mentioned in ancient Greek mythology, and an extensive rosarium. The garden serves as a major hub for botanical research, scientific documentation, and the conservation of endangered flora. Beyond its scientific role, it provides a vital green space and educational resource for the public, offering a sanctuary for local wildlife amidst the urban sprawl of the Greek capital.
