Thebes, known today as Thiva, is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in Greece, situated on a low ridge in the heart of Boeotia. In Greek mythology, it holds a central place as the birthplace of Heracles and Dionysus and the setting of the tragic Oedipus cycle. Historically, Thebes was a major power in ancient Greece, briefly achieving hegemony over the entire region following its decisive victory over Sparta at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC. The city was legendary for the 'Sacred Band of Thebes,' an elite military unit of 300 soldiers that remained undefeated until the rise of Alexander the Great. Modern Thiva is built directly atop the site of the ancient Kadmeia citadel and features one of Greece's most exceptional and modern archaeological museums. Economically, the region is a vital agricultural center, taking full advantage of the fertile Boeotian plains surrounding the urban area. The city blends contemporary life with millennia-old ruins, many of which are integrated into the modern streetscape. Its location along the primary transport corridors between Athens and Thessaloniki ensures its continued importance as a logistical and commercial hub.
