Schwarzenbek, widely known in the Duchy of Lauenburg as the "City of the Middle," is a friendly hub southeast of Hamburg that serves as a handy base camp for nature lovers. Due to its immediate proximity to the Sachsenwald, the largest contiguous forest area in Schleswig-Holstein, the small town is the excellent starting point for extensive hikes, cycling tours, or horseback riding through deep deciduous and coniferous forests. But the town itself also holds its own distinct charm. Its cultural heart beats in the historic Amtsrichterhaus (District Judge's House), an elegant building dating back to 1841. Today, its stylishly restored rooms and beautifully maintained garden regularly host well-attended art exhibitions, literary readings, and small chamber concerts. Another striking landmark in the center is the Franziskus-Haus, known for its modern brick architecture. Having been awarded the title of "Europe City" in 1955, Schwarzenbek fosters a wonderfully cosmopolitan and welcoming character. Traditional inns offering hearty Holstein cuisine provide the well-suited end to a day outdoors. If you want to leave the city hustle behind, this peaceful northern gem is the right spot.
