Widely known as the "Carp City," Reinfeld is charmingly located in the gentle rolling hills of Stormarn, located exactly halfway between the historic Hanseatic cities of Lübeck and Hamburg. The town's history is inextricably linked to the Cistercian order; in the 12th century, monks founded a monastery here and dammed the large Herrenteich lake to establish fish farming. Today, this massive, nearly 50-hectare lake still dominates the cityscape, making Reinfeld a popular local recreation area. A walk along the lakeside promenade features magnificent views over the water, and in autumn, the traditional Carp Festival attracts crowds to celebrate the annual harvesting of the lake. Visitors can then enjoy freshly caught Reinfeld carp in the local cozy taverns. Literature lovers know the town as the birthplace of the famous poet Matthias Claudius, whose most renowned poem, "The Moon has Risen," feels ever-present here. A monument and beautifully designed waypoints throughout the town honor his legacy. Surrounded by extensive beech forests like the Neukirchener Forst, Reinfeld is also an excellent starting point for extended cycling tours and nature walks.
