💡 Tips

  • Rent a bicycle. A well-developed network of cycle paths is the best way to explore the island, from the dunes in the north to the cliffs in the south.
  • Book a beach chair (Strandkorb) in advance, especially in summer. It gives protection from the sun and the often strong wind.
  • Take the bus. The island's bus network is excellent and connects all the villages, allowing you to leave the car behind.
  • Go on a guided mudflat hiking tour (Wattwanderung). The Wadden Sea on the east side of the island is a UNESCO World Heritage site, but never explore it alone.
  • The 'Ellenbogen' (Elbow) in the north is a private nature reserve and costs a small toll fee for cars, but is free for cyclists and pedestrians.

Westerland serves as the bustling administrative and tourist heart, whereas Kampen is renowned for its exclusive boutiques and traditional thatched-roof villas.
