💡 Tips

  • The island is extremely flat, making bicycles or e-bikes the best and most scenic way to travel between beaches.

Fehmarn is a unique island municipality in the Baltic Sea, linked to mainland Germany by the iconic Fehmarn Sound Bridge. Covering roughly 185 square kilometers, it is the only island in Germany that holds city status. The landscape is mostly flat, making it good for cycling, and it has one of the highest sun-hour counts in the country. The town center, Burg, features brick Gothic architecture and a lively harbor. Fehmarn is an international hotspot for windsurfing and kiteboarding due to its reliable wind conditions. Beyond tourism, it plays a vital role in international transport via the ferry port of Puttgarden, which will eventually be supplemented by the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link tunnel to Denmark. The island is also ecologically significant, hosting the Wallnau Waterbird Reserve, a crucial stopover for migratory birds. It remains a place of pilgrimage for music fans as the site of Jimi Hendrix's final festival performance in 1970.
