💡 Tips
- Rent a bicycle. The island is relatively flat and has an excellent network of cycle paths that lead through forests, dunes, and villages, it's the best way to explore Amrum.
- Climb the Amrum Lighthouse. After nearly 300 steps, you'll be rewarded with a panoramic panoramic view over the entire island, the Kniepsand, and the neighbouring islands.
- The 'Kniepsand' is a huge, ever-changing sandbank off the west coast. Allow plenty of time for a long walk to experience its sheer vastness.
- Visit the 'talking gravestones' in the cemetery of St. Clement's Church in Nebel. The inscriptions on the 17th and 18th-century stones tell fascinating life stories of whaling captains.
- Join a guided mudflat hiking tour (Wattwanderung). It's an unforgettable experience to explore the seabed on foot, but for safety reasons, you should never do this without an experienced guide.
🍽 Food
Enjoy lamb from sheep that have grazed on the island's salt marshes. This meat has a uniquely savoury flavour. Many traditional restaurants in the villages will have it on their menu.
For dessert or with coffee, try a slice of the classic Frisian cake. It's made of puff pastry, plum jam, and a generous amount of cream. Look for it in the island's bakeries and cafés.
A simple but delicious coastal classic. Freshly peeled North Sea shrimps on a slice of bread, best enjoyed at a small bistro or café near a harbour.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Stroll through the lanes of Nebel, the island's prettiest village. Here you'll find small boutiques and studios selling handmade jewellery, ceramics, and other crafts.
You can find special Frisian tea blends in the island's tea shops. Another popular souvenir choice is amber jewellery, which is available in many small stores.
Amrum's dunes are a vast nature reserve. Follow the marked boardwalk paths to experience this quiet, wind-sculpted landscape without disturbing the sensitive vegetation.
The eastern coast of Amrum, which faces the Wadden Sea, is significantly quieter than the western side with the Kniepsand beach. Here you can watch birds and enjoy the silence.
The island has one of the largest forests on any North Sea island. A walk or bike ride under the pines has a peaceful change of scenery from the beach.
Water temperature…
Amrum is located within the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and is famous for the Kniepsand, a 10-square-kilometer sandbank on the west coast. The island features a unique mix of heathlands, pine forests, and dunes reaching heights of up to 32 meters near Norddorf. The Amrum Lighthouse, built in 1875, stands 41.8 meters tall and is the highest active lighthouse on Germany's North Sea coast. Visitors enjoy the tranquility of the five island villages, especially Nebel with its historic thatched-roof houses and the 'talking tombstones' at St. Clement's Church. Arrival is by ferry from Dagebüll or Schlüttsiel, with the crossing providing views of the Hallig islands. The best time to visit is from June to September for beachgoers, while spring is good for birdwatching enthusiasts.
