Rising prominently above the Saxon countryside, the small town of Stolpen is inextricably linked to its imposing castle ruins, which sit atop a striking volcanic basalt cone. Stolpen Castle achieved historical infamy as the prison of Countess Cosel, the most famous mistress of the Saxon Elector Augustus the Strong, who was confined here for almost half a century until her death. Geologists revere the site for an entirely different reason: the columnar basalt found here is the type locality that gave this specific rock formation its scientific name worldwide. Below the fortress lies a welcoming, cobblestoned town center featuring a lovingly restored market square and small artisanal shops that invite leisurely exploration. Benefiting from a strategic location halfway between the city of Dresden and the Saxon Switzerland National Park, Stolpen is the excellent base camp for both history buffs and nature lovers. From the castle's highest tower, clear days afford magnificent panoramic views stretching all the way to the iconic table mountains of the Elbe Sandstone Highlands.
