Groitzsch is a historic town in southwestern Saxony, standing as one of the oldest settlements in the region. Its prominence peaked in the 11th century under Count Wiprecht of Groitzsch, a powerful nobleman who built his primary fortress here. The remains of this castle, the Wiprechtsburg, are now a protected archaeological site and feature the ruins of a Romanesque round chapel, the oldest brick structure in Saxony. The town is situated in the scenic White Elster river valley, which faced significant industrial pressure during the 20th-century brown coal mining era. Since the cessation of mining, the area has undergone extensive recultivation, becoming part of the Leipzig New Lakeland district. Today, Groitzsch is transitioning from an industrial hub to a green residential and recreational area, offering a rich blend of medieval heritage and modern lakeside leisure activities.
