Dohna is located in the Free State of Saxony, southeast of Dresden, in the valley of the Müglitz river. As the second oldest town in Saxony, Dohna is home to a history spanning over a millennium, closely tied to the Burgraviate of Dohna. During the Middle Ages, this burgraviate was one of the most powerful lordships in the region, controlling vital trade routes leading into Bohemia. The current townscape is defined by its easy on the eye market square and St. Mary's Church, which houses valuable late Gothic artworks. Geographically, Dohna acts as a gateway to the Eastern Ore Mountains and is situated very close to the memorable landscapes of Saxon Switzerland. The town's economic growth was long driven by agriculture and later metalworking; today, it prospers from its strategic location along the A17 motorway and its proximity to the state capital, Dresden. Hikers enjoy the 'Dohna Castle Path' and the scenic trails winding along the Müglitz river.
