Sinzig is a historic town in the Ahrweiler district of Rhineland-Palatinate, strategically positioned where the Ahr River flows into the Rhine. Known as the 'Barbarossa City,' it commemorates Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, who visited the local imperial palace multiple times in the 12th century. The town's crown jewel is the Basilica of St. Peter, a masterpiece of late Romanesque architecture completed in 1241, renowned for its memorable interior frescoes and geometric precision. Another architectural landmark is the neogothic Sinzig Castle, built in the mid-19th century and surrounded by an expansive park; it currently houses the municipal museum. Historically, Sinzig thrived as a trade hub and was famous for its ceramics industry. Despite the devastating floods that hit the Ahr Valley in 2021, the town has shown remarkable resilience in restoration. Today, Sinzig is a popular destination for cyclists and hikers, offering a blend of medieval imperial history, romantic Rhine scenery, and proximity to the famous red wine vineyards of the Ahr Valley.
