Rheinstein Castle

Rheinstein Castle is considered one of the most significant examples of Rhine Romanticism and is spectacularly situated on a rock above the Rhine near Trechtingshausen. Originally built in the 14th century as Voitsberg Castle, the site fell into ruin over time. In 1823, Prince Frederick of Prussia acquired the grounds and had the castle rebuilt in historicist style, the first of its kind in the Rhine Valley. The architecture combines Neo-Gothic elements with medieval structures and served as the Prince's summer residence. Of particular note are the stained-glass windows dating from the 14th to the 19th century and the historic furnishings of the living quarters. The grounds also include a castle chapel with a crypt where Prince Frederick and his family are interred. Today, the castle is privately owned and houses a museum providing insights into knightly life and Prussian history. The terraced castle gardens offer an expansive view over the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
