Wesseling is a powerhouse of the German chemical industry, situated on the left bank of the Rhine in the direct vicinity of Cologne and Bonn. While archaeological finds suggest human habitation since Roman times, Wesseling's modern narrative is defined by its rapid industrial expansion starting in the late 1930s. Today, it hosts a massive cluster of chemical and petrochemical facilities, including some of the largest production sites for Shell and LyondellBasell in Europe. This industrial focus has provided the city with a strong economic foundation, though it also shapes the skyline with cooling towers and pipelines. In response to its industrial nature, Wesseling has prioritized urban greening projects, most notably the 'Entenfang' nature reserve and a modernized Rhine promenade that features recreational space for residents. Its location makes it a vital hub for river-based logistics and a convenient residence for commuters working in the nearby Rhineland metropolitan areas.
