Herten is a city in the northern Ruhr area that exemplifies the structural shift from coal mining to green recreation. The most famous landmark is the Halde Hoheward, one of the largest spoil tips in Europe. At its summit is an imposing horizon observatory constructed of steel arches, as well as a large sundial, providing expansive views across the Ruhr region. At the base of the hill, the Zeche Ewald visitor center highlights the history of the miners and serves as an event venue. The historical center of the town is dominated by Herten Castle, a late Gothic moated brick building from the 16th century surrounded by a large English landscape garden. The castle park invites long walks among rare tree species. The residential districts feature old mining settlements whose brick facades preserve the charm of working-class history. Regional specialties, such as the Westphalian spicy beef stew known as Pfefferpotthast, can be found on the menus of traditional restaurants in the old town.
