Uelzen is a historic Hanseatic city located in the northeastern part of Lower Saxony, serving as a gateway to the scenic Lüneburg Heath. The city's most prominent landmark is undoubtedly the Hundertwasser Station, redesigned for the Expo 2000 project by the visionary Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Its whimsical design, featuring golden domes and mosaic-covered pillars, has made it a major tourist destination. Historically, Uelzen was a member of the Hanseatic League, and this heritage is preserved in its medieval town center, which has impressive examples of Brick Gothic architecture. Economic life in Uelzen is strongly tied to its large-scale sugar production facilities and its role as a logistics hub on the Elbe Lateral Canal. The surrounding landscape, characterized by vast forests and heather fields, features excellent recreational opportunities. The city successfully blends its artistic reputation with a practical importance as a transportation junction, connecting major railway lines between Hamburg, Hanover, and Berlin.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
