💡 Tips

  • To visit Wilhelmstein Island, take one of the traditional 'Auswanderer' sailing boats. The crossing is slower than the regular ferry but a much more authentic experience.
  • The lake is very shallow, with an average depth of only 1.5 meters. This makes it good for sailing beginners, but be mindful of the marked channels.
  • Rent a bike and circle the lake on the approximately 32 km circular path. Plan for a full day to enjoy the various spots and viewpoints along the way.
  • The best view of the sunset over the lake is from the waterside promenade in Steinhude or from the small Badeinsel (Bathing Island).
  • Parking can be difficult in summer. Use the large, signposted car parks at the entrance to the town and walk the last few hundred meters.

🍽 Food

🍽
Steinhude Smoked Eel

A must-try! Buy freshly smoked eel directly from one of the many smokehouses. Eat it on its own, on bread, or as 'Aal in Gelee' (jellied eel).

🍽
Fish Sandwich (Fischbrötchen)

A quick and delicious snack. Grab a roll with smoked fish or matjes herring from one of the stalls along the promenade.

🍽
Potato Pancake (Kartoffelpuffer)

Often found at festivals and markets. Try the freshly fried potato pancakes with applesauce, a simple but delicious treat.

🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

🛍
Eel Smokehouses

Visit one of the traditional eel smokehouses not just to buy the fish but often to also watch the smoking process.

🛍
Linen Weaving

In the historic barn and museum quarter, you can often find reminders of the historic linen weaving trade, with shops selling high-quality linen products.

🧘
Steinhuder Meer Nature Park (East Shore)

The eastern shore of the lake is less developed for tourism and, with its moors and wet meadows, provides great opportunities for bird watching and quiet walks.

🧘
Wilhelmstein Island (off-peak)

Visit the island early in the morning or late in the afternoon. You'll often have the small alleys and fortress walls almost to yourself.

🧘
The Hagenburg Moor Meadows

South of the lake lies an expansive nature reserve. Follow the paths and enjoy the absolute silence, interrupted only by birdsong.

Steinhude is a certified resort town on the southern shore of Steinhuder Meer. This former fishing and weaving village has carefully preserved its historic character, best seen in the 'Scheunenviertel' (Barn District) with its beautifully restored timber-framed barns. A highlight for any visitor is the Wilhelmstein island fortress, an 18th-century artificial island built by Count Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe, reachable via traditional wooden boats known as 'Auswanderer'. The lake is a haven for sailors, kitesurfers, and birdwatchers; the surrounding Nature Park gives scenic cycling and hiking trails through peat bogs and woodlands. Don't leave without trying the 'Steinhuder Rauchaal' (smoked eel), prepared according to centuries-old local recipes. The Fishery and Weaving Museum provides a look at the area's industrial past, while the local Butterfly Farm is a hit with families.
