Helmstedt, located in eastern Lower Saxony, is a city shaped by its roles as a center of enlightenment and a focal point of geopolitical tension. For over 200 years, it was home to the prestigious University of Helmstedt (Academia Julia), founded in 1576. The university's main hall, the Juleum, is a memorable example of Weser Renaissance architecture and remains the city's defining landmark. Following the university's closure in 1810, the city maintained its regional importance through agriculture and trade. In the mid-20th century, Helmstedt gained global notoriety due to its proximity to the inner-German border. Checkpoint Alpha, located just outside the city, was the largest and most important border crossing between East and West Germany, serving as the primary gateway for transit traffic to West Berlin. Since the fall of the Wall, Helmstedt has transformed into a peaceful hub for culture and nature, situated near the lush Elm-Lappwald Nature Park and featuring a beautifully restored medieval city core.
