Worms Cathedral, dedicated to St. Peter, is one of the three Rhenish Imperial Cathedrals alongside those in Mainz and Speyer and stands as a preeminent example of Romanesque architecture. The current basilica was built primarily in the 12th century, between 1110 and 1181, and is situated on the highest point in the city of Worms. Historically, the cathedral gained global significance during the Diet of Worms in 1521, where Martin Luther defended his teachings before Emperor Charles V and refused to recant. The architecture is characterized by its four round towers, two domes, and a double-choir floor plan, giving the structure a fortified and monumental appearance. Inside, the magnificent high altar by Balthasar Neumann from the Baroque era provides a striking contrast to the heavy Romanesque walls. The cathedral also bears witness to the city's long Judeo-Christian history, as Worms was considered one of the centers of Jewish learning (SchUM cities) during the Middle Ages.
