Staufenberg welcomes its visitors on the edge of the photogenic Lahn valley with a striking historical silhouette. The undisputed highlight of the town is Staufenberg Castle. The ruins of the upper castle and the 19th-century restored lower castle keep watch over the town from atop a steep basalt cone. Those who undertake the short but steep climb to the freely accessible castle ruins are rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view over the Lumda valley and across to the hills of the Taunus. Below the fortress, the historic old town clings to the hillside, its winding streets and meticulously maintained half-timbered houses preserving the medieval character of the settlement perfectly. Particularly worth seeing in the centre is the Schmahl House, a true jewel of regional architecture. Staufenberg benefits from its convenient location between the university cities of Gießen and Marburg, yet still manages to maintain the peaceful atmosphere of a rural community. Numerous cycling and hiking trails run through the surrounding forests and fields. In late summer, the highly traditional Krämermarkt attracts visitors from the entire region and transforms the narrow streets into a lively celebration of local trade and craftsmanship.
