The town of 20,000 residents is widely recognized for its almost entirely preserved historic old town, which features dense rows of half-timbered houses dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries. The centerpiece is the historic town hall built in 1589, notable for its distinctive frieze displaying the coats of arms of local noble families. A major element of the town's history is the Hohe Schule, a Calvinist educational institution founded in 1584, whose historic main building remains a prominent architectural landmark. Above the old town sits Herborn Castle, originating as a 13th-century fortress and later modified, which currently functions as a theological seminary. Remnants of the old town wall, including several stone watchtowers, encircle the historic core. The narrow streets, such as the Mühlgasse, host small cafes and artisan shops, while the surrounding hills of the Rothaargebirge provide access to long-distance hiking trails like the Westerwald-Steig.
