Highlights of 2026

Heppenheim is situated on the edge of the Odenwald in the Bergstraße district of southern Hesse, a town distinctly shaped by centuries of viticulture. The 26,000-resident city is overlooked by Starkenburg Castle, built around 1065, whose hilltop ruins provide expansive views across the Rhine plain to the Palatinate Forest. The historic market square is fully enclosed by elaborately decorated half-timbered houses, including the town hall built in 1551 and the historic Liebig pharmacy. Directly adjacent stands the neo-Gothic St. Peter's parish church, known locally as the Cathedral of the Bergstraße due to its monumental dimensions. The winding alleys of the old town contain numerous traditional wine taverns serving Riesling and Pinot Gris from the Hessische Bergstraße wine region. The 14th-century Amtshof, formerly an administrative building for the Archbishopric of Mainz, currently operates as the municipal winery. Along the sun-drenched slopes, well-maintained vineyard hiking trails such as the Weinlagenweg allow visitors to explore the agricultural practices of Germany's warmest climate zone.
