The Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße is the central site of remembrance for German division and the victims of the border regime. It spans 1.4 kilometers along the former border strip and includes a fully preserved section of the border fortifications, including the "death strip" and a watchtower. Bernauer Straße gained tragic fame because the border ran directly along the fronts of the buildings here, leading to dramatic escape attempts from the windows of residential houses. The ensemble includes the Chapel of Reconciliation, built on the site of the Church of Reconciliation which was demolished in 1985, as well as a documentation center with an observation platform. The memorial vividly conveys the brutality of the city's physical division between 1961 and 1989 and serves as a monument to freedom and human rights in a once-divided metropolis.
