Ulm Minster (Germany)

Weather…

Ulm Minster is a civic church built in the Gothic style and is known for having the tallest church spire in the world. The foundation stone was laid in 1377 when Ulm was a Free Imperial City, but the building was not finally completed until 1890. The striking west tower rises 161.53 meters into the air and dominates the cityscape on the Danube. Visitors can climb 768 steps to the uppermost observation platform at 143 meters, from where even the Alps are visible on clear days. Inside, the minster impresses with the magnificent choir stalls by Jörg Syrlin the Elder and significant stained glass from the 15th century. Since it was conceived as a civic church, the construction was funded almost exclusively by the city's residents. Despite heavy bombing raids on Ulm in 1944, the minster miraculously remained almost unscathed, while the surrounding old town was largely destroyed. Today, it is not only a sacred place but also an architectural monument of world renown.
