Located amidst the fertile orchards and vineyards of the Ortenau region, Renchen is a pleasant small town on the edge of the Black Forest. It is known nationwide as the "Grimmelshausen town", because the famous Baroque poet Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen, author of the picaresque novel "Simplicius Simplicissimus", spent the last years of his life here as mayor. In his honour, the fascinating Simplicissimus House was established, a modern literature museum that attracts culture lovers from all over the region. His impressive monument in front of the historic town hall also shapes the pretty town centre. Renchen benefits greatly from its mild climate, which provides good conditions for growing excellent cherries, apples, and wine. A walk or a cycling tour through the blossoming orchards in spring is a truly unforgettable experience. In the town's cosy, traditional Baden inns, visitors can taste regional specialities such as the famous Black Forest gateau or fine cherry schnapps directly from the producers, while enjoying the warm southern hospitality.
