Gengenbach is widely regarded as one of the most photogenic towns in Baden-Württemberg, located at the entrance to the Black Forest in the Kinzig Valley. As a former Free Imperial City, it features an exceptionally well-preserved medieval center characterized by half-timbered houses, narrow cobblestone alleys, and historic towers. The town's 18th-century town hall is internationally famous for hosting the world's largest Advent calendar house, where 24 windows feature artworks by renowned artists during the holiday season. The town's origins date back to the 8th-century foundation of a Benedictine abbey, which played a crucial role in the region's development. Surrounded by lush vineyards and orchards, Gengenbach is an important center for wine production. It is also a stronghold of the Alemannic Fasnacht, a traditional carnival where participants wear elaborately carved wooden masks, maintaining centuries-old customs that draw visitors from across the globe.
