Alte Burg
The Alte Burg (Old Castle) is a striking medieval castle ruin located in Osterode am Harz, Lower Saxony, Germany. Perched on a hill overlooking the town, its most prominent feature is the remaining half of its massive bergfried (keep), which dominates the landscape. Dating back to the 11th or 12th century, the castle originally served to protect the market town and the important trade routes crossing the Harz mountains. Over the centuries, the castle lost its strategic importance and gradually fell into disrepair. The ruins, particularly the thick walls of the remaining tower, offer a fascinating glimpse into medieval fortress architecture. Today, the Alte Burg is a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts exploring the Harz region. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Osterode and the surrounding forested hills from the castle grounds. The site is freely accessible and serves as a picturesque starting point or destination for various hiking trails in the Harz National Park area.
