Alte Burg

The Alte Burg is a historic former electoral water castle beautifully situated on the banks of the Moselle river in Koblenz. Constructed in the late 13th century by the Archbishop of Trier, its primary original purpose was to assert control over the increasingly independent citizens of the city. Encircled by robust defensive walls, it stands as a testament to the turbulent medieval power struggles of the region.

Over the centuries, the fortress has seen numerous expansions and renovations, transforming from a stark military stronghold into a more refined administrative building. The striking main tower is a prominent feature of the Koblenz skyline along the Moselle. Though much of the original water-filled moat has been altered, the imposing stone structure still commands respect.

Today, the Alte Burg primarily houses the municipal archives of Koblenz. While the interior is generally reserved for researchers, the exterior remains a highly popular attraction. Visitors walking along the scenic Moselle promenade can admire its well-preserved facade, making it a perfect addition to a walking tour of the nearby historic Old Town and the famous Deutsches Eck.
